A Shot In The Ass

Here's a little bit of reality. Forbes Magazine calls Essex County Massachusetts the most overpriced local in the country. Maybe if we stopped burning down our 40B affordable housing it would be an easier place to live.

In other news:

I know it's been a recurring theme with me to be so down on the housing market. Homes would be a lot cheaper around here if we didn't have 30 years of Title 9 and Wetlands Reclamtion Acts giving shortsighted city councils the tools they need to keep their quaint little villages from growing to meet the demand. Try building a 3 bedroom apartment. No town in Massachusetts will grant a building permit. Two bedrooms implies one or two children, three bedrooms implies 5 children. That's roughly 40,000 dollars in education costs per year on a property that could be taxable at around $1500 a year. In the mean time the towns bend over backwards to grant tax breaks to build 2 bedroom 55+ communities. It doesn't matter that they're shortselling their grandchildrens futures. They're not expecting any return on that sort of investment. What the hell can grandchildren ever do for them?

More on this later.

OH my is this my first "to be continued" posting?

"Melrose Court in south Tampa is using mimes, clowns and inflatable superheroes to attract buyers' attention, said Cindy Corrales, the sales director."

Damn. How come our condo realtor didn't have those?

South Tampa is filled with greedy and trendy people who are about to get their comeuppance, real estate-wise.

That said, it's also the only place in this godforsaken MSA to get decent Chinese food . . . so I reluctantly adopt a live-and-let-live policy when it comes to dealing with them.

If the Chinese Restaurants are still open then things can't be so bad. For some reason, they're always the first to close during a recession.

That's true. The Cuban restaurants, on the other hand, are extremely resilient, at least around here. Which is a good thing.

And very few of them are in South Tampa. Which is also a good thing.

There is a restaurant in Salem, just over the Beverly-Salem bridge, that constantly has someone dressed up as some cartoon character waving at passers by. This does not make me want to eat at their establishment. Plus, I have eaten there and it is not all that great. When I worked at a local bookstore we had childrens' story day themes and I have dressed up as the particular story book character and know how hot and uncomfortable the costumes are.
Anyway, the point of my story is as a Realtor I would not resort to such campy lame-assed things as what they are doing in Florida to entice buyers into my listings. What ever happened to baking cookies? I guess desperate times calls for desperate measures, but using superheros is ridiculous! Real Estate is not a job for Underdog, Batman or Superman. It is a job for serious Realtors to advise their sellers to price their properties to sell.
