Balls And Shaft

I just got home from a much too short weekend in Manhattan. The Kurz and I met up in NYC for a late lunch and some very abreviated sight seeing. Much of our conversation orbited my recent raising to the sublime degree of Master Mason and further light from the appendant bodies. Mike is hooked. He's so totally asking to be one that I find myself invested with renewed curiosity and enthusiam for the craft. Trying to look up the lodge in New York to see if there's anyting going on in the city that never sleeps I find all sorts of other websites. They lead me to other sites.

I come down with a wicked case of ADHD and just start wandering through the interwebs. I find this picture on a site that's claiming to be exposing all sorts of satanic Masonic secrets.

That's not the handshake.

None of the handshakes on that page are correct. If it was a disinformation site meant to trick e-masons who haven't truly recieved light I wouldn't be so concerned. But much of what Kurczy and I talked about was on some of the scandals and controversey surrounding my brotherhood. I feel the need to call out cowans.

Anyway, come home Mike. I want to be there on the 5 points when you're raised.

Will your Masonic secrets save -- or destroy --the world...?

Neither. Fact of the matter is that those who are drawn to power are likely to exploit any means within reach. Some Masons are on a crooked city council. Does that make the Masons crooked? The Masons are the kind of guys who would want to lead their community regardless of whether there was a secretive supper club or not. The theatrics are from a bygone age but we enjoy them for what they are. Dinner theater with a purpose. If the Lions or Rotarians met at the Green Dragon 232 years ago 'National Treasure' would be about them.

Area 51 is where we test new aviation hardware for the military. It's not where we hide aliens.

JFK was killed, possibly by CIA men who went on to bungle Watergate. Some of them were probably Masons. At the time there was a roughly 1 in 220 chance that a male anywhere in the world was a Mason. In reality Masons did tend to cluster in democratized western cultures so those odds go way down for places like Texas or Washington DC. They go down even further for towns with a functioning lodge.

Were there Masons involved in any conspiracy anyone can think of? Maybe. Do Masons sit in lodge deciding who lives and who dies and who gets out of a speeding ticket? No.

Do we sometimes get photographed flashing our gang signs. Sure we do. Is every photograph of a politician shaking hands evidence of sinister plotting? Maybe some are but that's not one of them.

You kind of summed up how I feel about it with "The theatrics are from a bygone age but we enjoy them for what they are. Dinner theater with a purpose." My post was meant to make light of that; you know I'm not a big tinfoil hat guy (although I have a song from the point of view of one). The "breakfast of infamy" scene in "Slacker" is one of my favorite monologues ever.

I find it funny in the same way the Stonecutters did:

"Tonight we are here to commemorate our glorious society's 1500th anniversary, and in honor of this momentous occasion -- we're having ribs!"

The Masons don't really make much sense if you ask me. They get together and do stuff, in secret, and then what?

And don't tell me things like community service and blah, blah, blah. I know what you're up to... I have a secret society too. It's called the, uh, what's that over there...

..and pautera135 really needs to learn some net etiquette. What a jerk.

I'm tempted to delete Paultera's comment but there's something so brazenly close-but-not-quite-punk that go with all the wannabe skater pictures that I almost find charming in a I'm-38-&-I-Can-Beat-My-Students-At-Tony-Hawk kind of way.
