I Hate Being Right All The Time

Back in the day when I used to talk to people face to face, you know before the blog, I said to a friend who was pissing all his money away on Internet Stocks that turned out to be nothing more than wishful thinking that I thought the DOW should be 3000. This was back when the DOW was giddy over hitting 11,000 for the first time. Now it's not fair to try to compare the DOW today with the DOW of yesteryear. Afterall, if the stocks don't perform the newspaper that counts the DJIA just drops them and replaces them with stocks that do perform.

You can't run a proper experiment if you keep changing variables whenever you feel like.

New Feature

Been a while. Both since a new post and also since I added a new feature to the ol' Dean Rules!

It's called "Dean Finds A Continuity Error" and it works like this. I spot a cut in a movie where something is impossibly different from the moment before it. I get to brag about my cleverness.

The first one comes from the fine motion picture "The Legend of Bagger Vance". In the scene where Matt Damon first picks up the golf clubs and goes out in the back yard to practice hitting we see him drop a small bag of clubs. We see the clubs on the ground and Damon's character pulls a club out of the bag. The club coming out of the bag is a wood but in the next jump cut Damon is holding an iron.

I rule!

I Don't Think You've Thought Your Cunning Plan All The Way Through

I guess Florida has a law requiring gas stations to have self contained generators in case society collapses. This sounds like a great idea to lawmakers who don't actually have to pay for the burdens on the cost of doing business themselves. As the article points out you can have all the generators in the world but if your evacuate the staff who's going to turn the pumps on?

I don't think the law is really for the evacuating citizenry at all. If the power goes out forcing the gas pumps on does no good to the station owner if there's no way to pay for the gas. No electricity in the state, people are fleeing disaster and you expect their credit cards to clear? The gas stations will have to go to cash only but who carries $100 to fill the Escalade?

I can't believe the entire legislature forgot to think about that when passing this law. So I have to draw one of two conclusions about the government that passes such a law. They either don't care about passing half hearted and poorly reasoned laws that burden their commonwealth. This would be the lesser of two evils despite the almost malevolence and malice against their constituents. The other conclusion would be that the generators aren't there for the refugees at all but are there to ensure that the occupying army of state and federal and Blackwater jack booted thugs have access to fuel during a crisis.

Suddenly All Of My Problems Seem Meaningless

From Rolling Stone:

In the Rolling Stone article, Letterman discusses guests including Madonna, Oprah Winfrey and Howard Stern, with the most moving remarks about musician Warren Zevon, who appeared on "Late Show" shortly before his 2003 death from cancer.

Letterman recalled his "heartbreaking" meeting with Zevon in a dressing room after the show.

"Here's a guy who had months to live and we're making small talk. And as we're talking, he's taking his guitar strap and hooking it, wrapping it around, then he puts the guitar into the case and he flips the snaps on the case and says, `Here, I want you to have this, take good care of it.' And I just started sobbing.

"He was giving me the guitar that he always used on the show. I felt like, `I can't be in this movie, I didn't get my lines.' That was very tough," Letterman said.

How'd That Happen

Now things are just getting weird.

I wish Dr Hunter Thompson was still alive. He'd have something meaningful to say about all this. Or maybe not.

Fuck. This is beginning to sound like "The Birdcage".

Thank you Agador. That will be all Agador.

I never understood why the Senator believed the Cultural Attache to Greece lived in Miami Beach. That seemed like something he could have looked up.

I think I need to go take my Ritalin.

Oooh look. Shiney.
